When Gene Clark released his masterwork No Other in 1974, the former Byrds frontman solidified himself as one of the greatest singer-songwriters of the 20th century. Brilliantly fusing Laurel Canyon country rock with elements of deep psychedelia, R&B, folk, and gospel, the eight songs of No Other represent a visionary artist at his creative peak. If you couldn’t already tell, this is easily one of our all-time favorite albums over at PV, and a seriously important influence for just about everything we do musically.
Today, we are honored to be carrying some hyper-limited stateside copies of 4AD’s lavish double-CD deluxe edition reissue from 2019. On the first disc, a pristine remaster of the original album done by the fine folks at Abbey Road, and on the second, some incredible session mixes “forensically worked on” by Sid Griffin (the Long Ryders, Western Electric) and John Wood (Nick Drake, Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny). It’s a truly special edition; the two discs here housed in a hardbound book cover and packaged alongside a 28-page booklet (with some promotional photos we’d never even seen before!).
Essentially, this reissue is the perfect introduction for anybody looking to get into Gene Clark, a hero of American folk and country music who deserves a place alongside the greats such as Dylan, Townes, and Parsons. The original recording of “Train Leaves Here This Morning” on disc two is honestly worth the price of admission alone, and these 10 units we have on hand are among some of the last copies you’ll find anywhere in the states. Strongest possible recommendation.
